When Daniel Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting in 2017, many believed we had seen the last of one of the greatest actors.
But this fall, at the age of 68 he’s coming out of retirement and returning to the screen in Anemone, a film directed by his son.
In a recent interview, he admitted he never really intended to retire but instead just needed a break.
The lifestyle and intensity of acting had left him drained, but the passion never disappeared.
His story is a reminder that retirement can just be a pause to refresh and recover.
Mini-Retirements Aren’t Just for Millennials
You may have heard the term “mini-retirement.” It’s become popular with Millennials and Gen Z, who are intentionally taking breaks of six months to a year during their careers.
Rather than working straight through until 65, they step away, recharge, and then return feeling refreshed again.
On the surface, Day-Lewis’s eight-year break from Hollywood looks very different from a young professional traveling for a year.
But at the heart of both is the same idea: stepping back doesn’t mean stepping away forever.
What It Means for Today’s Retirees
Retirement doesn’t have to be permanent, and it doesn’t have to follow one script.
You may stop working full-time, only to discover that you miss the sense of purpose and contribution. You might return to work part-time, volunteer, or even start a new venture. Or you might take retirement in “chapters” - one season for travel, one for family, one for learning or creative pursuits.
Just like Day-Lewis, you may find that after a period of rest, you’re ready for a new beginning.
Life comes in seasons, and retirement can too.
The key is carving a life of flexibility that balances rest, purpose, and renewal.
A New Way to Think About Retirement
Daniel Day-Lewis reminds us that a mini-retirement can be a pause to start a new chapter.
At More Than Money, we believe retirement should be about finding meaning, purpose, and joy in every stage of life.
